Spring Energized Seals for Medical Equipment

Spring Energized Seals for Medical Equipment

  • August 04. 2023

Spring Energized Seals are made up of two components: a polymer-based seal jacket and spring energizer. Spring energized seals are great for use in environments that are too aggressive for other types of seals, as they provide a longer service life, maintain sealing pressure, and offer extreme wear resistance.

Spring Energized Seals are popular in the medical device industry for a variety of reasons, including their low friction, chemical resistance, and excellent performance in a variety of pressure, temperature, and speed situations. Spring energized seals provide a reliable sealing solution that is effective even in low-pressure environments. In addition, spring energized seals work exceptionally well in cryogenic applications. Even if an off-the-shelf spring energized seal won’t meet your needs, you can look into a custom-designed spring energized seal tailored to your requirements and specifications.

Spring Energized Seals are regularly used in medical device Industry, drug delivery systems, and orthopedic applications, etc. Found in everything from dialysis equipment and infusion pumps to oxygen therapy, implanted electronic devices, trochars, and IV systems. Including a variety of surgical instruments such as high and low-speed handpieces, surgical saws, bone shavers, oscillating saws, and bone drills. They are also seen in rotary catheter systems, centrifuges, and both small motors and small pumps. Reciprocating equipment also may require spring energized seals, with typical applications including respirators, oxygen compressors, Oxygen Concentrators, dialysis machines, syringe pumps, hematology analyzers, pharmaceutical equipment, and autoclave equipment.

There are a wide variety of seal jacket materials that can be used, but the choices are significantly limited for medical applications. The materials used must be FDA and ISO compliant. This significantly limits what materials can be used for the polymer jacket. The three most common choices are these: UPE, PTFE, and PEEK.

Spring energizer materials are either metal or elastomeric, with metal being the most common. For medical applications, the three most commonly used metals for the spring energizers are stainless steel, Elgiloy, and Hastelloy.

Advantages of Spring Energized Seals:

A. Good sealing performance, especially in the state of no pressure and slight pressure;

B. Simple structure;

C. Good chemical resistance;

D. The friction factor is small, the friction force is small, and the wear is small. Even if it wears out, it can automatically compensate due to the action of the spring clamp, so the service life is long;

E. Strong compression resistance;

F. Long storage period.
