Wear Ring seal also called Guide Rings, Wear Bands, are typically used in cylinders and machinery with requirements for dynamic performance and service life. Wear ring materials are well known for their low friction, heat resistance, wide temperature range performance, high chemical resistance and excellent wear characteristics.

Popular wear ring materials include glass filled Nylon, bronze filled PTFE, glass filled PTFE, Phenolic and carbon-fiber reinforced compression molded. Wear rings could be piston seal and rod seal. Wear rings are available in scarf cut, straight cut and step cut styles.

The function of wear ring is to absorb the side load forces of the rod and/or the piston and to prevent metal-to-metal contact that would otherwise damage and score the sliding surfaces and eventually cause seal damage, leakage and component failure. Wear rings should last longer than the seals as they are the only thing stopping expensive damage to the cylinder.
