How to replace plunger pump packing?

How to replace plunger pump packing?

  • July 07. 2022

Plunger pump packing is the sealing device of plunger pump, which is mainly a protective device to prevent the liquid at the hydraulic end from flowing out and improve the operation efficiency. JST Seals has developed high performance well service pump packings to provide maximum sealing for high-pressure oil well service pump. As the plunger pump is a high-pressure machine pump, and the temperature of the transmission medium is high, it is very easy to wear and cause liquid leakage. In order to make the machine pump run better, the operator should be familiar with the replacement of the seal of the plunger pump.

Preparation before operation

1. Operators wear and use labor protection articles correctly

2.  Preparation of tools and appliances

Inspection before operation

(1) Cut off the control power supply of the panel of the plunger pump operation panel, wear insulating gloves to disconnect the power supply of the "plunger pump" transformer, disconnect the air circuit breaker of the "plunger pump" power supply, and use the test pencil to check the power of the air switch outlet end. After confirming that there is no power, hang the "do not switch on" sign;

(2) Close the manual valve at the inlet and outlet of the plunger pump, open the pressure relief valve at the upper part of the plunger pump to relieve the pressure, and confirm that there is no pressure at the inlet and outlet of the plunger pump through the pressure gauge at the inlet and outlet of the plunger pump;

(3) With a 250m adjustable wrench, remove the screws of the inlet flange of the plunger pump counterclockwise, remove the inlet end cover, and drain the water in the cylinder block.

Remove the old packing seal

(1) Use the end cap wrench of the plunger pump to remove the end cap screws at the inlet in an anticlockwise direction, remove the red end caps and sealing rings at the inlet, and place them horizontally to a safe position;

(2) Loosen the packing gland anticlockwise with the packing gland wrench, and operate sideways with even force during operation;

(3) Use two 300m pipe wrenches or open-ended wrenches to clamp the connection of the plunger and connecting rod opposite each other, remove the plunger from the middle rod counterclockwise, and turn the turning gear to push out the plunger and place it flat to a safe place. It is strictly forbidden to clamp the pipe tongs on the surface of the column base or connecting rod;

(4) Remove the packing gland, take out the outer guide support copper ring, the old packing and the inner guide support copper ring in turn with a 250 flat screwdriver, and check that the guide ring is not deformed or cracked, otherwise replace it.

Install new packing seal

(1) Apply lithium grease to the inner ring of the new packing, install the inner guide ring, the new packing and the outer guide ring in turn, and the packing interfaces are staggered and compacted at 120 ° to each other;

(2) Install the packing gland, screw in 3 buckles, and the tightness should be moderate. Turn the intermediate connecting rod to the power end near the oil seal;

(3) Two people work together to install the plunger, one of whom puts the plunger into the packing box and taps it gently to the middle rod. One person uses a 300m pipe wrench or an open-ended wrench to connect the plunger clockwise with the intermediate rod firmly;

(4) After installing the removed end cover of the inlet, use the end cover wrench of the plunger pump to tighten the end cover screws of the inlet diagonally in a clockwise direction;

(5) Use the packing gland plate to screw the packing gland clockwise into the buckle ≥ 5, and the tightness should be appropriate.

Post startup inspection

(1) According to the starting direction of the plunger pump, turn it forward for 3 rounds to confirm that there is no jamming;

(2) Check and clean the sealing surface and sealing ring of the end cover, install the sealing ring and end cover respectively, apply a little grease to the screws of the end cover, and tighten them clockwise and diagonally with the end cover wrench;

(3) After checking and confirming that the sealing surface of the piston pump inlet flange and the sealing gasket are in good condition, apply a little grease to the screws, tighten them diagonally clockwise with a 250mm adjustable wrench, install the inlet end cover, and close the drain valve at the bottom of the piston pump;

(4) Clean up the site.
