What's PDR rotary shaft seal?

  • April 18. 2024

PDR rotary shaft seal extends the boundaries of elastomeric radial shaft seals, utilizing advanced materials and design techniques to provide optimal sealing performance for each application. The result is a superior sealing solution that retains a compact sealed casing.

Due to the inherent limitations of various elastomer grades, the application range of standard elastomer rotary shaft seals is limited in terms of temperature, surface velocity, medium compatibility, pressure, or a combination of these factors.

In addition, they have limited applicability only for applications with insufficient lubrication.

The characteristics of PDR rotary shaft seals, especially low friction and stick-slip-free operation, reduce temperature generation and allow for higher circumferential speeds.

PTFE has inherent memory properties, so deformed PTFE components will attempt to recover the contours of their manufactured sintering cycles.

General Description

PDR seal consists of only two parts - a precision manufactured metal body and a mechanically retained PTFE sealing element. Unlike seals with pressed metal shells, gaskets are not required to provide sealing between the lip and the shell. This is provided through mechanical retention of the lip edge, thereby improving the chemical resistance and temperature range of the sealing system.

Where required, PDR seals can provide hydrodynamic characteristics on the sealing lip. This provides a positive displacement of the fluid as a result of shaft rotation, providing improved sealing in applications where the shaft rotates only in a single direction. This feature also increases the flexibility of the lip edge, which allows for a wider contact band between the lip edge and the shaft, and helps to reduce shaft load and related wear temperatures.

The mechanical retention of PTFE provides a sturdy product, which also eliminates the sometimes environmentally harmful process of bonding PTFE to metal or elastic substrates.
