Backup Ring (anti-extrusion rings) fit in the gland between the seal and the clearance gaps to provide zero clearance.

Back-up rings provides additional resistance support to the seal and minimizes the risk of the seal being squeezed out of its housing under pressure. Although they do not be designed with sealing function in themselves. They used with o ring play an important role in whole sealing system. The purpose of using the backup ring is to prevent the O-ring from extruding into the sealing gap under the system pressure.

Back-up rings are placed behind the seal if it is a single acting system, or both sides if double acting.

In sealing systems that are facing burdens from severe duty cycles, higher pressures (above 3,000 psi) and higher temperature, “filled” PTFE backup rings also be a solution.  variety of fillers may be added to the PTFE to improve service life, resilience to temperature and pressure or improved lubrication.
