What Is the Best Seal Material for High-Pressure and High-Temperature Applications?

What Is the Best Seal Material for High-Pressure and High-Temperature Applications?

  • November 04. 2026

High-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) applications place demanding requirements on sealing materials. In the oil and gas industry, seals used in wellhead equipment, downhole tools, valves, and fracturing systems may be exposed to high pressure, elevated temperatures, aggressive fluids, and repeated pressure cycles.

So, what is the best material for these conditions?

There is no universal answer. The right material depends on the operating temperature, pressure, fluid compatibility, mechanical requirements, and seal design. For demanding oil and gas applications, commonly considered materials include HNBR, FKM, AFLAS, modified PTFE, and PEEK.

1. HNBR: For Demanding Oil and Gas Applications

Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) is widely used in oil and gas sealing applications where oil resistance, mechanical strength, and resistance to aging are important.

Compared with conventional NBR, HNBR generally offers improved heat and aging resistance, making it a suitable material family to consider for demanding wellhead and downhole applications.

Typical applications: Wellhead seals, downhole seals, and well service equipment seals.

2. FKM: For Elevated Temperatures and Chemical Exposure

Fluoroelastomer (FKM) is commonly selected for applications requiring resistance to elevated temperatures, oils, fuels, and various chemicals.

Its suitability depends on the specific formulation and the media involved. Different FKM compounds can have different temperature ranges, chemical compatibility, and mechanical properties.

JST offers FKM compounds for oil and gas sealing applications, including specific grades with documented testing against relevant industry requirements.

Typical applications: Wellhead equipment, oilfield valves, and downhole sealing systems.

3. AFLAS: An Option for Specialized Oilfield Conditions

AFLAS is another elastomer material available in JST's oilfield sealing solutions.

It can be considered when the application requires a particular balance of fluid compatibility and thermal or chemical resistance. However, its suitability should be assessed against the actual media, temperature, pressure, and compound specifications.

Rather than selecting AFLAS based on its material name alone, engineers should confirm that the specific grade meets the requirements of the intended service.

Typical applications: Selected wellhead and oilfield sealing applications.

4. Modified PTFE: For High-Temperature and Chemical Resistance Requirements

Modified PTFE is used in sealing designs that require chemical resistance, low friction, and thermal stability.

Unlike elastomers, PTFE-based materials have different elastic recovery and deformation characteristics. They are often incorporated into specially designed sealing profiles, including spring-energized seals.

JST offers different PTFE formulations, including graphite-filled, carbon-fiber-filled, glass-fiber-filled, and bronze-filled grades. Each formulation has different properties and application considerations.

Typical applications: High-temperature sealing, hydraulic systems, and applications involving corrosive fluids.

5. PEEK: For High Mechanical Demands

Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) is a high-performance thermoplastic used in demanding industrial sealing applications.

It offers high mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to elevated temperatures. In sealing systems, PEEK is particularly useful in supporting components and anti-extrusion applications where mechanical loads are important.

Typical applications: Backup rings, downhole sealing systems, and other high-pressure sealing assemblies.

6. How to Choose the Right Material for HPHT Applications

The best material is not necessarily the one with the highest temperature rating. Material selection should consider the complete operating environment.

Before choosing a material, evaluate the following:

Temperature: Minimum, continuous, and maximum operating temperatures.

Pressure: Normal and maximum pressure, pressure differential, and pressure cycling.

Media: Oil, gas, chemicals, drilling fluids, and other process media.

Mechanical requirements: Extrusion resistance, deformation, wear, and compression set.

Operating conditions: Static or dynamic movement, installation space, and equipment geometry.

Qualification requirements: Relevant material testing and customer specifications.

For high-pressure gas applications, rapid gas decompression resistance may also be important. For aggressive chemical environments, fluid compatibility should be confirmed using the specific material formulation.

It is also important to remember that material selection and seal design must work together. A suitable material cannot compensate for an unsuitable sealing profile, excessive extrusion clearance, or incorrect installation.

7. How JST Supports HPHT Sealing Applications

JST Seals develops and manufactures sealing solutions for wellhead equipment, downhole tools, oilfield valves, and well service equipment.

Its material options include HNBR, FKM, AFLAS, FFKM, PTFE, and PEEK, with different formulations and configurations available for specific applications.

JST's capabilities include material development, mold development, precision manufacturing, and testing. Depending on the application, material evaluation may involve temperature, pressure, fluid compatibility, and other relevant performance requirements.

The objective is to identify a suitable combination of material and seal design based on the actual operating conditions.

Conclusion

Selecting the right material for high-pressure and high-temperature applications requires more than comparing temperature ratings.

HNBR and FKM are important elastomer options for oil and gas sealing. AFLAS can be considered for selected specialized applications, while modified PTFE and PEEK provide additional options for demanding thermal, chemical, and mechanical requirements.

The final selection should always be based on the specific material grade, operating environment, and seal design.
