Bottom hole assembly (BHA) tools (such as impactors and jars) need to be sealed to protect the tool hydraulic system from the impact of abrasive drilling mud and cuttings in the hole. Measurement while drilling (MWD) tools sometimes need high-temperature sealing solutions. This field operation is expensive, If seal failed it would cost millions of dollars. Therefore, material tests should be done in every step from the material selection, seal design, seal manufacture to the quality control of the finished item to make sure the seal could be safely used in downhole conditions for the service time.
