What are Spring Energized Seals?

JST Seals produces a full range of spring energized seals that are used in a wide range of applications. The Spring Energized Seals are normally comprised of a machined polymer jacket and a spring energizer.

The polymer jacket can be made of different materials, from Virgin PTFE or PTFE with fillers, to PEEK and UHMWPE seals profiles.


Spring configurations such as helical spring energized seals, slant coil spring energized seals, cantilever V spring energized seals are readily available or can be produced custom to your application. JST Seals can produce springs made from 301 Stainless Steel, 302 Stainless Steel, 304 Stainless Steel, 316 Stainless Steel, Cocalloy®, Elgiloy® and other Alloys. A variety of spring designs can be used and the spring configuration is selected based on your application.


Spring energized seals can be produced for applications that present challenges to other conventional seal designs and no matter what the media a seal can be designed to fit the application. Common seal applications that call for spring loaded seals range from explosive decompression resistant seals or RGD Seals, extreme temperature applications, high surface speeds, non-lubricated systems, Extreme pressure, Vacuum applications and more.


The common applications of spring energized seals in oil & gas field are API 6A gate valves and API 6D ball valves, especially the valve stem and valve seat. Seals contribute to the overall performance of industrial operations. They serve the vital task of keeping oil and liquids in while keeping contaminants out.
