Why do we choose helical spring for cryogenic ball valve seals?

Cryogenic Sealing Solutions provides a powerful sealing mechanism for cryogenic materials such as cryogenic fluids. Sealing at cryogenic temperatures has its own unique set of challenges.


JST Seals recently designed and shipped a very urgent LNG cryogenic valve seals for the overseas customer. Its completed working conditions are as follows:


Fluid media LNG at temperature: minus 175°C

Maximum temperature: 65°C

Working pressure: 51 bar (as ANSI Class 300)

Hydro shell test pressure: 78 bar


Based on above working conditions, JST provides a double helical spring seals solution, which is made of TFM + Double Golden Alloy Spring:

Why do we choose helical spring instead of canted level spring?


It is because of the spring force, Helical spring provides good and enough spring force for the Jacket under the ultra-low temperature, while the spring force of Canted level spring is very limited, which will have great impact on the sealing performance.
